World Cup: Uruguay and Argentina to formalise their joint bid for the 2030 edition

"Argentine President Mauricio Macri will travel to Uruguay on 30/08/2017 so that both governments and both countries will jointly announce their official bid for the 2030 World Cup," said Tabaré Vazquez, President of the Republic of Uruguay, on 21/08/2017.

This will be the first joint bid for these two countries for a World Cup. Of the 22 editions of the competition already awarded (from 1930 to 2022), only one in 2002 (in South Korea and Japan) was hosted by multiple countries.

This will also be the first formal bid for the 2030 World Cup, the centennial edition. In 1930, Uruguay had hosted the first World Cup of football and won the competition at the expense of Argentina in the final (4-2).

Liliam Kechichian, Uruguayan Minister of Tourism, announced to the press the intention of the two countries to bring together Argentinian Lionel Messi and Uruguayan Luis Suarez, both strikers of FC Barcelona (LaLiga Santander), to promote this 2030 bid, on 16/08/2017.
