Italy: Federation softens sanctions for racism and regional discrimination

The FIGC (Italian Football Federation) has modified the rule on bans and stadium closures for racism and territorial discrimination, 16/10/2013. They will now consider, depending on the case, suspended sentences: the disciplinary body may provide that a sanction automatically apply if the same offense is recorded in the following twelve months.

Depending on the number of supporters involved, discriminatory chanting could also result in partial or blanket stadium closures.

The sanction imposed on AC Milan on the 07/10/2013 for "territorial discrimination against rival fans" during the Juventus-AC Milan (3-2 on the 06/10/2013) match, has not been canceled, but will be reviewed. The stadium closure ban on the Milan vs Udinese match on the 19/10/2013, has been canceled.

Giancarlo Abete, President of the Italian Federation intends to remain firm, however, regarding the behavior of some Italian ultras: "If they continue, the tools of sports justice will continue to punish them by closing their stadiums for two or ten weeks.
