Rugby World Cup 2019: expected output of €3.4bn, including €1.65bn for Japan (EY)

The 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan should generate "a total output of around ¥437.2bn (€3.4bn)" of which "¥216.6 bn (€1.65bn) of additive value to be pumped into the Japanese economy," announced World Rugby on 20/03/2018 after a study carried out by the firm EY for the international organisation.

The Rugby World Cup 2019 is expected to host as many as 400,000 visitors and tourists over the 44 days of tournament. Their expenditure on food, souvenirs, travel and accommodation is anticipated to amount to around ¥105.7bn (€813m). The 2015 edition in the United Kingdom drew 406,000 visitors spent an average of 14 nights at the 44-day tournament, generating financial benefits of around €2.6m.

The study also estimated that the country should invest nearly ¥40bn (€300m) in infrastructure. Hosting the tournament will help create jobs in different sectors that can benefit all segments of the population. The report also estimated that 25,000 jobs could be created throughout the country.
