Qatar 2022: the organising committee to "ensure the rights of workers"

"The companies that build facilities for the 2022 World Cup will be obliged to ensure the rights of workers," announced the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, on the 18/11/2013, in response to the publication by Amnesty International of a report denouncing "an alarming level of exploitation" of migrant workers in Qatar, published on the 17/11/2013.

The competition organisers also announced the creation of a workers committee and the publication in late 2013, of the standards for the protection of workers "from recruitment to repatriation". A supervisory structure will be implemented by a third party. "Compliance with the law and Q22's standards will be a contractual obligation for companies working on Q22 projects," indicated the organising committee.

The Amnesty International report entitled "The Dark Side of Migration: Spotlight on Qatar's Construction Sector Ahead of the World Cup," denounces the working conditions of migrant workers for: non-payment of wages, difficult employment and housing conditions, blackmail, and even being unable to leave the country.
