FIFA: Confederations to be consulted on a new 24-team Club World Cup project

Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, is expected to meet the presidents and general secretaries of the six confederations (UEFA, CAF, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, AFC and OFC) to discuss a project involving a group of investors ready to inject $25bn (€20.4bn) over the 2021-2033 period for the organisation of a new format Club World Cup (every four years) and a Nations League on a global scale, according to British and American media on 23/04/2018.

"A meeting with the confederations will take place in due course but no date has been set yet. Further consultation is also ongoing with different stakeholders on potential changes to the FIFA Club World Cup," said a FIFA spokesman, quoted by the American newspaper The New York Times on 23/04/2018.

The consortium's project, that brings together the Japanese holding company Softbank and investors from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and the United States, is set to launch in June-July 2021 and would replace the Confederations Cup with a quadrennial Club World Cup that would bring together 24 teams, 12 of which would be from Europe…
