Bundesliga: German league refuses to pay police for Werder Bremen matches

The DFL (German Professional Football League) have refused the proposal by the SPD (German Social Democratic Party) of the Bremen Senate, requesting that they cover police expenses incurred during Werder Bremen (Bundesliga) home matches and not the municipality, on the 03/12/2013.

The DFL say they will use the courts to quash the decision if it is to be passed. The decision would be a first in German football, where it is the local communities that pay the expenses incurred by the police to ensure the safety of professional football games.

"The current legal situation is clear. If the politicians in Bremen were to make legal changes, we would resist them by all legal means at our disposal, all the way to the Federal Constitutional Court," said Reinhard Rauball, president of the DFL, on the 03/12/2013.

The league say they are in constant contact with the federal Department of the Interior and its counterpart in Bremen, but that the issue of cost sharing police expenses between the two entities has not been mentioned. The SPD in the Bremen Senate indicated that the community is paying…
