Croatian international Josip Simunic has been suspended for ten official matches by the Disciplinary Committee of FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), who met on the 12/12/2013, and notified him and the Croatian Federation of the penalty, on the 16/12/2013.

After the 2014 World Cup play-off between Croatia and Iceland, on the 19/11/2013 in Zagreb, "FIFA was made aware that the player, after the final whistle, displayed discriminatory behaviour in interaction with the Croatian supporters," said the international Federation.

"The committee took note that the player, together with the crowd, shouted a Croatian salute that was used during World War II by the fascist “Ustaše” movement. As a consequence, the committee agreed that this salute was discriminatory and offended the dignity of a group of persons concerning, inter alia, race, religion or origin, in a clear breach of article 58 par. 1a) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code."

The Dinamo Zagreb defender had already been found guilty and fined €3,200 by the Croatian judiciary.
