Premier League: £7.6bn impact on the UK GDP and £3.3bn of tax revenue in 2016-17

The Premier League and its clubs contributed, directly and indirectly, £7.6bn (€8.7bn as of 24/01/2019) to the UK GDP, and generated £3.3bn (€3.8bn) in tax revenue in the 2016-17 season, stated the UK office of EY (Ernst & Young), an audit and consultancy firm, in its report "Economic and Social Impact Assessment", published on 24/01/2019.

"Our latest report clearly shows that a successful Premier League is good not just for football but for the country as a whole. Gross Value Added impact from the clubs has grown from £0.7bn (€0.81bn) in 1998-99, to £7.6bn (€8.7bn) in 2016-17, an astounding increase of 800% in cash terms and a compound annual growth rate of 13%," said Mark Gregory, chief economist at EY, in this report which studies both the contribution of the Premier League to the British economy and English football in general, as well as the social actions carried out by the clubs of the English first division.

In the 2016-17 season, nearly 100,000 FTE (full-time equivalent) jobs were directly or indirectly related to the Premier League, with the majority of these positions…
