502 Indian migrants have died on projects related to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar since January 2012, said the Indian embassy in Qatar on 17/02/2014. 237 died in 2012, 241 in 2013 and 24 for the month of January 2014, says the embassy, without specifying the cause of death or the jobs occupied by migrants.

"The Indians are the largest foreign community in Qatar. Compared with the number of Qataris who have died of natural causes in the past two years, the number of deaths we see among the Indian community is normal," said Ali al Smaikh Merri, the president of the CNDH (National Commission on Human Rights) in Qatar on 18/02/2014.

"The World Cup can improve the human rights situation... Removing the World Cup from Qatar would be quite counter-productive. It would leave things as they are and human rights violations would continue out of the spotlight," said Theo Zwanziger, a member of the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) Executive Committee, during a hearing before the subcommittee of human rights in the European Parliament in Brussels (BEL) on 13/02/2014.
