NBA: eight members of the US Congress ask the League to suspend its activities in China

Eight members of the US Congress have asked the NBA "to suspend its activities in China until Chinese-controlled broadcasters and sponsors cease their boycott of NBA activities and their special treatment of the Houston Rockets," in a letter addressed to the North American basketball league on 09/10/2019.

China's public broadcaster CCTV and the Chinese internet services group Tencent canceled the broadcast of NBA pre-season matches in Asia in October 2019, following a tweet from Daryl Morey, general manager of the Houston Rockets NBA franchise, supporting pro-independence demonstrations in Hong Kong, originally published on 05/10/2019.

Daryl Morey, James Harden (star player of the Houston Rockets)m Tilman Fertitta (owner of the Houston Rockets) and the NBA have all apologized to the Chinese public following this tweet, since deleted by its author.

  • Tencent has extended its partnership with the NBA in China for five seasons until 2024-25, for an estimated $1.5bn on 28/07/2019.
    • Tencent is the exclusive digital partner of the NBA in China.
