MLS: Orlando City Council approves the stadium construction project for Orlando SC

The Orlando City Council has approved the construction project of a new stadium for Orlando SC on 31/03/2014. The franchise will become part of the MLS (Major League Soccer, North American League) from 2015.

The council of Orlando unanimously voted in favour of the construction of the venue, which will belong to the municipality. The stadium of 18,000 seats, exclusively dedicated to football, comes at a cost of $84m (€61m) of which $15m (€10.8m) is for the land itself. Orlando SC leaders hope to start playing at the venue in the summer of 2015. They will begin the championship in 2015, starting in March at the Citrus Bowl stadium of 70,000 seats, dedicated to American football and also owned by the City of Orlando. The stadium will include 2,500 VIP seats and 300 seats in VIP boxes.

The stadium will be designed by the British architectural firm, Populous, which has also designed two other MLS venues: BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston and Sporting Park in Kansas City.

Financing the stadium:
