Five clubs have not been allowed to participate in the Champions League and 39 have not been allowed to participate in the Europa League since 2004-05 for non-compliance with participation licensing or financial fair-play criteria. In 2012-13, seven clubs were banned from participating in European Cup competitions, said the sixth annual benchmarking report on European clubs, published by UEFA (Union of European Football Associations), on 17/04/2014.

This paper analyses the profile of the clubs of the 53 first divisions affiliated with UEFA, including the 2012 business reports and financial data of the 696 clubs in total.

La Liga BBVA (Malaga and Rayo Vallecano in 2012-13, Mallorca 2010-11) and Premier League (Portsmouth in 2010-11) are the only two Top 5 European Championships to have teams not admitted in the European Cups over the past ten seasons.

577 European clubs applied for a license to participate in the European Cups taking place in 2013-14 (237 participants in total), and 18% of them (or 102 clubs) were initially denied the license (seven clubs excluded in the end).
