Brazil 2014: Tourists will spend €2.2bn (Brazilian Ministry of Tourism)

Tourists will spend $3.1bn (€2.2bn) during the 2014 World Cup, according to a study by the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism and FIPE (the Brazilian Economic Research Institute Foundation) published on 14/05/2014.

Tourists will spend an average of $2,500 (€1,823) excluding the price of airfare. 1.9m spectators, including 300,000 foreigners, are expected at the 12 stadiums of the World Cup and the 12 "Fan Fests" (festive and free zones equipped with giant screens at each World Cup site). Expenditures are estimated at $1.9bn (€1.38bn).

An additional 1.8m tourists will come to Brazil to enjoy the festivities related to the World Cup and will spend $1.2bn (€875m), according to the study by the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism.

The total financial turnover for tourism during the World Cup might be more than double the anticipated figure, "if we consider the multiplier effect of these resources in the Brazilian economy," said tourism minister Vinicius Lages on 14/05/2014.
