Qatar 2022: Organisers break ground on first stadium (Al Wakrah)

The work of the first stadium for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Al Wakrah Stadium (45,120 seats), has begun, announced the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, in charge of organising the 22nd World Cup on 20/05/2014.

HBK, a local construction company, began excavations to prepare construction, in September 2014, of the foundation of Al-Wakrah stadium, 15 km south of Doha (the capital of Qatar). This stadium will be surrounded by a park of 60 hectares with a school, a hotel, a mosque and a job training centre. The delivery of this stadium is planned for 2018.

"HBK agrees to comply with standards for the welfare of workers in accordance with Qatari labour law and international best practices that protect workers' rights," said the Supreme Committee.

  • The minimum number of stadiums required by FIFA to host the World Cup is eight, at least one of which must have a capacity of 80,000 in order to host the final.
