Netherlands: KNVB wants video refereeing technology beginning with 2014-15 season

KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Association) wants to make use of video refereeing technology (also known as instant replay, or video replay technology) beginning in 2014-15, the association announced on 20/05/2014. The technology will be used only for certain Netherlands Cup and reserve team matches.

"We focus on situations that could be decisive for the match, such as whether or not a penalty should be awarded, serious misconduct, or goals scored after a foul was made," said KNVB competition affairs manager Gijs de Jong. The decision of the video referee, installed outside the stadium, will be made in less than 10 seconds.

Video refereeing technology have already been used by KNVB, with the support of FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), for test matches during the 2013-14 season. "On average this season, there were two or three contentious moments per game where the video referee could have had a supporting role," said de Jong.
