"David Baldwin has today announced he is set to leave his position as chief executive of the EFL in six months time," said the English Football League on 12/10/2020.

Appointed in December 2019 when he was CEO of Burnley FC (Premier League), a club with which he had hoped to end the 2019-20 season, David Baldwin eventually took office in June 2020, at the time of the restart of the English championship, suspended since 19/03/2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. His departure is partly explained by the health crisis (see below), but "not linked to 'Project Big Picture' and the decision was taken prior to details of the proposals being made public over the weekend (see below)," added the EFL.

"Whilst disappointed, I understand the reasons Dave has outlined and respect his wishes. He remains committed to the EFL and will continue to lead the Executive until he leaves us in 2021," said Rick Parry, chair of the EFL.

"Accepting this position pre Covid-19 means the situation is now very different to the one I originally envisaged" (D. Baldwin, EFL)
