England: FA bans players from first eight divisions from betting on football

The FA (Football Association) passed a ban on players in England betting directly or through third parties on any football match, domestic or foreign, at its general assembly in Wembley Stadium (ENG) on 21/05/2014.

The measure, which will come into force on 01/08/2014, will apply to all players playing in Premier League, Championship (2nd division), League One (3rd division) League Two (4th division), Football Conference (5th and 6th divisions) and the first two divisions of Northern, Southern and Isthmian (equivalent to the 7th and 8th national divisions).

The prohibition applies in the UK, but also abroad. It applies not only to football, but also to football-related bets, such as on player transfers, hiring and dismissal of managers, or the composition of national teams.

The ban on players communicating inside information to gamblers is maintained. Until now, the players of the first eight British divisions were forbidden from betting on matches or competitions in which they participated or that they could directly or indirectly influence.
