At €2.7bn, 12 Brazilian stadiums cost 45% more than projected

At 8.4bn reais (€2.7bn), the 12 host stadiums for the 2014 World Cup cost 45% more than foreseen by the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) when it disclosed the list of host cities on 31/05/2009. The CBF had then expected a total cost of 5.7bn reais (€1.9bn).

The CBF had estimated "$1.1bn (€807m) in secured investments for the construction and/or renovation of stadiums" at the time of its selection by the executive committee of FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football) to host the competition on 30/10/2007.

The total expenditure includes five stadium renovations and seven new stadiums, including the Mane Garrincha stadium, for which the scope of the work cannot be seen as a simple renovation. The federal capital's stadium is the most expensive, with an estimated cost of €528m, far from the originally projected €208m (a 154% increase). Many delays, accidents and additional costs partly explain this difference. Since spring 2013, protests in the main Brazilian cities have denounced in particular numerous cases of corruption.
