The Mané-Garrincha national stadium in Brasilia (population 2.789m, federal capital of Brazil) was inaugurated on 18/05/2013, in a regional championship match between two clubs from the city. The stadium then hosted the opening match of the 2013 Confederations Cup between Brazil and Japan (3-0) on 15/06/2013 in front of over 67,000 spectators.

The stadium was entirely financed by public funds via Terracap (the development agency of the Federal District of Brasilia). The federal government's auditing body estimated the cost of the stadium at 1.6bn reais (€528m), making it the most expensive stadium of the 2014 World Cup. The project was originally expected to cost 631m reais (€ 209m), but the amount was multiplied by 2.5.

The stadium has no clubs playing in the Brazilian football top division. Brasilia FC, the resident club, play in the 2014 regional championship.
