Brazil 2014 FIFA asks Twitter to delete accounts with the logo of the World Cup

FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) has asked the social network Twitter to delete the accounts of brands that display the 2014 World Cup logo in their publications, FIFA announced on 29/05/2014.

FIFA is targeting more than 100 accounts illegally using the official logo of the World Cup, which is trademarked, for promotional purposes and to mislead the public. Such brand violation can be punished by the definitive deletion of a Twitter account.

"We ask companies to respect the exclusivity to brand association with the World Cup that FIFA has granted to its commercial affiliates by avoiding activities that might create a commercial association and/or seek promotional exposure around the tournament," said FIFA on 29/05/2014.

The deletion request was issued under the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act), which provides sites like Twitter a way to fight against violations of copyright.
