Tokyo 2020: €2.3bn in additional costs due to the postponement, an overall budget of €13bn

The fifth and last version of the budget of the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee reports 721 billion yen (€5.7bn) of expenditure, on 22/12/2020. The total cost of the event is now 1,644 billion yen (€13bn), including 923 billion yen (€7.3bn) to be paid by the Japanese State and the City of Tokyo (see details below).

The fourth version indicated expenditure of 630 billion yen (€5.17bn), on 20/12/2019, for a total cost of the event of 1350 billion yen, an increase of 91 (€720m) to 294 billion yen (€2.3bn) due mainly to the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to the postponement of the Olympic Games in 2021.

This budget makes these Olympic Summer Games the most expensive in history, ahead of those in London (UK) in 2012 (€12.2bn). All Olympic Games combined, those of Sochi (RUS) in 2014 Winter Olympics remain in the lead (€17.9bn).

The organizing committee for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games (JPN) estimated that this postponement would cost at least 267 billion yen (€2.1bn) more than initially expected on 04/12/2020, including 171 billion yen in operational costs and 96 billion…
