TV rights: "Definitely going to be a correction in the value of the rights" (S. Green, BT Sport)

"There’s certainly going to be a rights correction and it may be seen and interpreted by many as rights deflation," Simon Green, managing director of the British pay-TV package BT Sport, said at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit on 17/02/2021.

"It would be a welcome change to the market... Over the last 20 or 30 years with some particular examples of where broadcasters pay an awful lot of money for rights. I don't think that's going to happen so much going forward now, so I do see a realignment," added the managing director of BT Sport, the holder in particular of the broadcasting rights, in the United Kingdom, to the European football cups for £394m (€454m) per season over the 2018-2021 cycle, and £400m (€461m) per season over the 2021-2024 cycle. In addition, the group holds a package of 52 Premier League matches per season for £325m (€374m) over the 2019-2022 cycle.

The statement comes as the Premier League is scheduled to launch its tender for the domestic broadcast rights over the 2022-2025 cycle in this year 2021. These rights are currently held by Sky, BT…
