Saurez case: FIFPro says suspension "directly infringes on his right to work"

"[Suarez' suspension] must be addressed as it directly infringes on his right to work", stated FIFPro (the World Players' Union) on 27/06/2014, after the Uruguayan Luis Suarez (Liverpool FC) was handed a four-month suspension by FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association). FIFPro added that "the fact that Liverpool FC is affected needs to be an important issue."

Suarez, a striker, was suspended for nine games and banned for four months from "taking part in any kind of football-related activity" by the disciplinary committee of FIFA on 26/06/2014. The governing body had opened disciplinary procedures against the player, who was accused of biting Giorgio Chiellini (ITA) on the 80th minute of the Italy vs. Uruguay game (0-1, group D, in Natal, Brazil) on 24/06/2014 as part of the World Cup (Brazil, from 12/06 to 13/07/2014). The AUF (Uruguayan Football Association) appealed the decision on 26/06/2014.
