FIGC: 278 delegates to elect new president; three-fourths majority needed in first round

278 delegates will elect a new president for the FIGC (Federazione Italiano di Giuoco Calcio, the Italian football federation) during an election by the federal assembly on 11/08/2014 in Roma (ITA).

Two candidates declared their candidacies by at least 15 days prior to the vote, as stipulated by the regulations: Carlo Tavecchio, 71, the president of the Lega Dilettanti (Italian amateur league), and former international midfielder Demetrio Albertini, 43, the vice-president of the FIGC.

Carlo Tavecchio remains the frontrunner in the election in spite of his comments made on 25/07/2014 in front of the amateur football league wherein he compared African footballers to "banana eaters".

Giancarlo Abete, the FIGC president since 02/04/2007, had announced his resignation on 25/06/2014 following Italy's elimination in the group phase of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
