Premier League (the English first division) intends to take action against users who post bits of matches in the form of Vines (videos under six seconds) and GIFs (short video animations) on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter during the 2014-15 season, the league announced on 15/08/2014.

Users can now easily back up and record bits of Premier League games off of live TV and post them on social networks almost immediately. Premier League wants viewers to be aware that doing so is illegal and as it infringes on the league's intellectual property.

"You can understand that fans see something, they can capture it, they can share it, but ultimately it is against the law. It's a breach of copyright and we would discourage fans from doing it, we're developing technologies like gif crawlers, Vine crawlers, working with Twitter to look to curtail this kind of activity," said Dan Johnson, director of communications for Premier League, speaking to the BBC, on 15/08/2014.
