"There are too many foreigners in the Italian league. On this issue, we need the help of the government," said Carlo Tavecchio, president of the FIGC (Federazione Italiana di Giuoco Calcio, the Italian Football Federation) on 08/09/2014.

"I have contacts with the government with regards to non-EU players that should have a certain CV to play in Italy, in the same way that there is a law in England on this issue," added Carlo Tavecchio during an interview at Radio Onda Libera. "For non-EU players, it is more diffucult because of the principle of free movement for workers."

Carlo Tavecchio wants to introduce a requirement for each team to field four Italian players (that would also be replaced by other Italian players during a game). His objective would be to increase this number to six in the next year. "We are going to make the government aware of this issue to obtain the necessary judicial elements, but it will be difficult," admitted the new president of the Italian federation, who knows that European laws prohibit these types of nationality-based limitations.
