Premier League: Chelsea contact the English Rugby Union about playing at Twickenham

Chelsea FC (Barclays Premier League) have contacted the RFU (Rugby Football Union) to play at Twickenham (capacity 82,000) during the renovations that the club wants to start at Stamford Bridge, confirmed a spokesman for the English rugby federation on 28/09/2014.

Chelsea want to expand Stamford Bridge to increase its capacity from the current 41,623 seats, to 60,000. "We're investigating different scenarios as part of the consultation process we started earlier this year, but have had no discussions of substance so far," said a spokesman for Chelsea FC to the British newspaper The Sunday Times on 27/09/2014.

"We are regularly contacted by a variety of organisations, within and outside sport, on a wide range of opportunities concerning the use of what we believe is a world-class stadium. We have had an enquiry from Chelsea FC, but have not had any discussions of any substance," said a spokesman for the RFU to The Sunday Times.

The RFU-owned Twickenham Stadium opened in 1907, and this enclosure for the national rugby team of England has never hosted a football match in its history…
