Germany: "We see no reason to intervene (in protests against RB Leipzig)" (W. Niersbach, DFB)

"Of course we monitor the behaviour of fans of the competing teams, but here (the nation-wide protests against RB Leipzig) we see no reason to intervene," wrote Wolfgang Niersbach, the president of the DFB (Deutscher Fußball-Bund, the German federation), in a letter to politicians in the district of Northern Saxony (GER) on 15/10/2014.

Since its promotion to the 2.Bundesliga for the 2014-15 season, RB Leipzig have been subject a large-scale "Nein zu RB" ("No to Red Bull") protest from organisations all over Germany. The protest denounces the Red Bull group, the Leipzig club's owner and primary financier, for not respecting German football's "50+1" rule, which prevents private shareholders from holding a majority of the voting rights in German professional clubs.

  • Wolfgang Niersbach re-affirmed, in the letter to regional politicians, that all Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga clubs compete under the same rules and equal opportunities remain safeguarded.
