The 2014 summer transfer window was marked by new records of expenditures (€1,042.2m) and transfer revenue (€549.4m) established by the Barclays Premier League.

In total, the five major European leagues (Barclays Premier League, Liga BBVA, Bundesliga, Serie A TIM and Ligue 1) spent €2,273.3m for their transfer activities, and earned €1,795.4m in revenues. In both cases, these are new records. This creates a negative balance of transfer payments of €478.1m, while two championships in the Top 5 made a profit: +€91.7m for Ligue 1, and +€50.6m for the Serie A. Ligue 1, meanwhile, recorded its lowest total transfer expenditures (€134.1m) of the last 10 summer transfer windows.

In total since 2005, the Top 5 have spent over $17.5bn and generated more than €13.1bn in revenues for their activities in the summer transfer windows. This represents a cumulative deficit of $4.4bn over the last 10 years.
