NBA: integration of Hawk-Eye (Sony) for out-of-bounds and goaltending situations from 2023-24

British company Hawk-Eye Innovations Ltd, which has been part of the Sony group since 2011, has been appointed by the National Basketball Association as a "provider of officiating and 3D optical tracking technology" that will be introduced for the first time in the NBA from 2023-24, announced the body on 09/03/2023.

Cameras will be placed around the court to allow real-time 3D tracking of player and ball movement. "This technology will provide the opportunity to enhance officiating by increasing the accuracy of calls and the speed of gameplay, including, in future seasons, through automated calls on plays such as out-of-bounds and goaltending," explained the body.

Hawk-Eye Innovations is working with the NBA to develop this dedicated technology by collecting data from previous NBA Summer League events and six NBA franchise arenas. The firm based in Basingstoke (ENG) deploys its technologies in tennis (ATP Tour), rugby (World Rugby), volleyball (FIVB) and football (MLS, UEFA, DFL and Lega Serie A), notably for goal-line technology.
