Italy: FIGC reduce Serie A squads to 25, including 4 players trained in Italy and 4 at the club

The FIGC (Federazione Italiana di Giuoco Calcio, the Italian Football Federation) voted the implementation of reforms in Serie A which will reduce the number of registered players in a club to 25, including at least eight trained in Italy and four "homegrown" from the club, on 20/11/2014.

These reforms, effective from 2015-16, are intended, said the FIGC, "to protect Italian football and advance the national team." "This new management, which is a reflection of our philosophy, should allow us to recover from the stall suffered by the country, because right now, we're not in good shape," said Carlo Tavecchio, president of the Italian Federation, on 20/11/2014.

  • A new non-EU player can only be brought in to replace another if he has already held a professional contract for at least three years, and the practice of freeing up places by loaning foreign players abroad is no longer allowed.
  • The number of players under 21 years old (mostly Italian) is not limited.
  • Limiting the size to 25, with eight Italian homegrown players, including four club-trained, is a reproduction of the system…
