“The sale of alcohol at grounds has been on the agenda within our Professional Game Board for a number of months now. We’ve had discussions internally and with Police Scotland," said Stewart Regan, chief executive of the Scottish Federation, to the Scottish newspaper The Scotsman on 05/12/2014.

“It remains something we would like to explore. Why are there challenges for Scottish football fans in having a drink in a football stadium?" said Stewart Regan on the sidelines of a meeting of the Federation.

  • The restriction on the sale of alcohol in stadiums was imposed following a riot after the final of the Scottish Cup between Celtic and Rangers in 1980.
  • Sponsorship of sporting events and teams by alcohol brands is still permitted in Scotland.
  • Magners, the Irish cider brand, is the shirt sponsor Celtic FC (Scottish first division) in 2014-15.

"Fans are much more appreciative of the entertainment (of sporting events now)" (Stewart Regan)

  • "We can’t make the decision ourselves. We need to work with others and persuade, influence and maybe try some things and, hopefully over time
