Super League/CJUE: "The LFP unequivocally supports competitions organised by UEFA" (V. Labrune)

"The Ligue de Football Professionnel unequivocally supports the competitions organised by UEFA. Nothing can replace the legitimacy, credibility and prestige of the European competitions as they have been organised for over 60 years now. We are very attached to the principles of sporting merit which must govern the organisation of our sport: whether in the context of qualifying for European competitions, or more generally with regard to the principles of promotion/relegation," declared Vincent Labrune, president of the LFP, on 21/12/2023, in reaction to the publication of the CJEU judgment rendered earlier in the day.

"The FIFA and UEFA rules making any new interclub football project subject to their prior approval, such as the Super League, and prohibiting clubs and players from playing in those competitions, are unlawful.  They are contrary to competition law and the freedom to provide services," announced the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), based in Luxembourg, which specified, however, "that does not mean that a competition such as the Super League project must…
