AFCON 2017: Egypt pulls out of the running for the tournament and supports the Algerian bid

"We have decided to withdraw our application and will support that of Algeria," said Khaled Abdel Aziz, the Egyptian youth and sports minister, on the subject of Egypt's bid to host AFCON (African Cup of Nations) 2017, on 20/02/2015.

19 people were killed in clashes between supporters of the club Zamalek and the police, which also left dozens injured, before the Zamalek-ENPPI match (1-1, 20th matchday of the Egyptian Premier League), played at the Borg Al Arab stadium, Cairo (Egypt) on 08/02/2015. The Egyptian national championship has been suspended since that match and no date has yet been set for its resumption.

With the withdrawl of Egypt, three countries - Algeria, Gabon and Ghana - are left in the running to host AFCON 2017. The host country will be appointed at the congress of CAF (African Football Confederation) in Cairo (EGY) on 08/04/2015.
