The city council of Rome (Italy) approved the City's nomination to host the 2024 Olympics, with 38 votes in favour and 6 against, on 25/06/2015. The budget of the Rome bid, about €6bn, should be similar to that of Paris (France, €6.2bn budget).

"Together, beginning with this vote, we'll learn to win this challenge and bring this event to Rome with the goal of transforming the city, curing old urban wounds and making our beautiful capital more livable, welcoming and modern," stated Ignazio Marino, the mayor of Rome, on 25/06/2015.

The announcement comes six months after the "Mafia Capital" corruption scandal in December 2014, which saw the dismantling of the influence of human trafficking and the criminal management of the refugee camp system in Rome. The scandal resulted in the arrest of over 30 people including politicians such as Gianni Alemanno, the mayor of Rome between 2008 and 2013.

  • The 6 people who voted against were: Marco Pomarici, a city councillor, Riccardo Magi, the president of an Italian radical party and 4 members of the "5-Star Movement", the opposition party.
