The South Korean Chung Mong-joon, the former president of the KFA (1993-2009) and former FIFA vice-president (1994-2011), has announced his intention to stand for the FIFA presidential election, on 30/07/2015.

"I believe I have a good chance of winning the elections. It is time that FIFA had a non-European leadership," said Chung Mong-joon, the majority shareholder of the South Korean conglomerate Hyundai, whose fortune is estimated at approximately €1.1bn, to the BBC on 30/07/2015.

Chung Mong-joon lost his position as a vice-president of FIFA in 2011, and was replaced by Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein (JOR) following an election organised by the AFC. Chung Mong-joon sought to return to the FIFA Executive Committee at the 26th Ordinary Congress of the AFC on 30/042015, but was not elected to one of the three AFC positions available.

The FIFA presidential elections will be held during an extraordinary Congress held in Zurich (SUI) on 26/02/2016. This date was set by the FIFA Executive Committee on 20/07/2015. The deadline for candidates to submit their applications is 26/10/2015.
