Euro 2016: €1.266bn in economic benefits for France, according a CDES study

Euro 2016 will allow France to generate €1.266bn in economic benefits, according to a study conducted by the CDES (The Centre for the Law and Economics of Sport) in late 2014, at the request of UEFA, published on 15/09/2015. This amount of €1.266bn only considers financial spending from foreign agents (stadium spectators and fan zones, and investment from organisations). Spending by French spectators is excluded from the calculation. The methodology is based on data from the last two major competitions organised by France: the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the 2007 Rugby World Cup.

The CDES assessed the overall economic impact of the tournament to be €2.8bn, of which €1.7bn related to investment in the 10 stadia to be used in the competition. Spending at the venues should amount to €842m in total, including 70% from foreign spectators (€593m). The cumulative expenditure in the various fan zones are expected to generate €352m, 55% of which would come from foreign fans (€195m).
