The two Scottish professional leagues set to merge

Scottish Football League clubs have voted in favour of a proposed merger with the Scottish Premier League on 12/06/2013. A new "Scottish Professional Football League" will be formed, comprising the Scottish Premier League (12 clubs in the first division) and the Scottish Football League (30 clubs in divisions 2, 3 and 4).

The new system will include a revised financial distribution model to share revenue between the 42 clubs across the four divisions and the play-off at the end of each season.

The final implementation of the new system, including a meeting of the 42 clubs involved and the appointment of the new Board of Directors will be held on 27/06/2013.

The Scottish Football League was founded in 1890. Teams in the top decision decided to leave the league for self-management in the Scottish Premier League in 1998. They no longer wished to redistribute a share of their revenue to lower division clubs.
