FIFA suspends Cameroon's football federation for "government interference"

FIFA's (International Federation of Association Football) Emergency Committee has temporarily suspended Fecafoot (Cameroonian football federation) with immediate effect, for "government interference", FIFA announced on the 04/07/2013.

FIFA has criticised the Cameroonian government for having been involved in the re-election of Fecafoot's president, Iya Mohammed, on the 20/06/2013, despite the fact that Mohammed was being detained by the Cameroon authorities for alleged embezzlement. Sepp Blatter, FIFA president, officially recognised the election, before it was annulled by Fecafoot's election appeals board.

"Articles 13 and 17 of the FIFA Statutes oblige member associations to manage their affairs independently and with no influence from third parties," FIFA said on the 04/07/2013.

Details of Fecafoot's suspension:

  • A normalisation committee will be set up to revise the Fecafoot statutes and to organise a new election by the 31/03/2014, and will manage day-to-day affairs.
