The 12 stadiums being used in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil will all offer spectators free WiFi, according to Sao Paolo newspaper O Estado, on the 12/07/2013. The aim is to avoid 3G and 4G network congestion, in and around the stadiums.

The National Union of Telecommunications and Mobile Services Companies (SindiTelebrasil) estimates that 30-40% of data will be transmitted over WiFi connections during the World Cup.

The installation cost of WiFi, 3G and 4G solutions in the 12 host-stadiums is estimated at €34m by SindiTelebrasil. The funding should be supported by various Brazilian telecoms operators. These private companies are also likely to invest €68m to improve mobile networks around the stadiums.

  • The 20th edition of the FIFA World Cup will be held in Brazil from the 12/06/2014 to the 13/07/2014.
  • Organised by FIFA (International Federation of Football Associations), the competition brings 32 national teams and includes 64 matches.
