EPFL: opposed to the future of the Champions League, the union of leagues breaks agreement with UEFA

"The UEFA Executive Committee's recent decision related to European club competitions leaves the EPFL with no other option than to terminate the current Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two organisations," announced the EPFL after its General Assembly meeting in Zurich (SUI) on 21/10/2016.

"The UEFA-EPFL agreement provides that before any changes to the format and financial principles of the European cups, UEFA must first consult the EPFL. UEFA has broken this agreement, which is now obsolete," had previously said Lars-Christer Olsson (SWE), chairman of EPFL, on 05/10/2016.

The new format of the Champions League (2018-2021) was presented by UEFA on 26/08/2016, and stipulates that the top four clubs of the top four ranked countries in the UEFA coefficient c (currently Spain, Germany, England, and Italy) will automatically qualify for the group stage, and will therefore represent 16 clubs of the 32 clubs.
