Germany: the federation is considering suspended sentences for sent-off players

The DFB's (Deutscher Fussball-Bund, the German Football Federation) disciplinary committee is considering the possibility of suspended sentences for players that are sent off, according to the German press on the 20/07/2013.

"We will shape our sanctions to be more preventative than repressive," said Hans Lorenz, president of the German disciplinary committee. "It would not come into effect with short suspensions, but possibly in cases such as Paolo Guerrero, (Hamburg SV player between 2006 and 2012) who was once given a seven-game ban for a foul, he could then have a three-game suspended sentence."

"What do you have to do to get a four-match ban? That would be unsportsmanlike or violent conduct. I wouldn't know why that player should be allowed parole," responded Jürgen Klopp, Borussia Dortmund manager. "That would be nonsense. The referee has to decide on the pitch, not some judges in the courtroom," said Marcell Jansen, a Hamburg SV player.
