Brazil: Chapecoense club decimated in a plane crash, the football world in mourning

71 people have died in the crash of LaMia Airlines flight 2933, which was flying from Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Bolivia) to Medellin (Colombia), on 29/11/2016. The plane was carrying members of the Brazilian club Chapecoense (Chevrolet Brasileirão Série A), among other passengers connected to the football world and flight crew.

Six of the 77 passengers, including four players from Brazilian club, survived the crash. It was originally reported that there were 81 people on the original passenger list, but 4 people ultimately did not board the flight.

The Chapecoense club was travelling to Medellín to face the Colombian club Atletico Nacional in the first leg of the final of the Copa Sudamericana, the second most important club competition of CONMEBOL, after the Copa Libertadores. Chapecoense have grown rapidly in the hierarchy of Brazilian football since 2009, when the club was still playing in the fourth division. Chapecoense are based in Chapecó, a town of 200,000 inhabitants, located 1300 kilometers south of Rio de Janeiro.
