Newcastle United (16th in the Premier League in 2012/13) striker Papiss Cissé, has resolved a dispute with the club, on the 25/07/2013, and has agreed to wear a shirt featuring pay-day loans company Wonga's logo, following negotiations with Newcastle, the PFA (Professional Footballer's Association), Muslim clerics and his agent.

Papiss Cissé, a practicing Muslim, did not want to wear the shirt on the basis that Muslims should not benefit from either lending money or loaning money from another person. The player had offered to wear an unbranded shirt, or one promoting a charity, in order to avoid going against sharia law.

  • Newcastle and Wonga signed a shirt-sponsorship for the 2013/14 season on the 09/10/2012.
  • Wonga is also Newcastle's stadium naming partner, though the company are set to keep the stadium's original name "Saint James's Park" for the duration of the contract.
  • Newcastle shirts featuring the Wonga logo went on sale on the 15/05/2013.
