The Hyundai A-League will become the first professional football league to use video assistant referees, announced the Football Association of Australia on 03/04/2017. The first game in Australia with an active video assistant referee will be Melbourne City FC - Adelaide United, the first game of Matchday 26 of the A-League, scheduled on Friday, 07/04/2017 (kick-off at 19:50 local time, 11:50 CET).

"We've come across a couple around the expectations of what a clear error is, also the challenge on the time it takes to make decisions, and the way those decisions are communicated to the broadcaster and the fans," said Ben Wilson, director of refereeing at the FFA, indicating that the tests were conducted for six months in games of the lower divisions.

In Europe, Germany will use video assistance from the 2017-18 season in the Bundesliga. In France, video assistance will be used in 2017-18 from the quarter-finals in the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue.
