"CONCACAF member nations the United States, Canada, and Mexico today declared their intention to formally submit a unified bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup," announced the football federations of the three countries in joint press conference in New York (USA) on 10/04/2017.

This proposal would be the first time the World Cup would be jointly hosted in 3 countries, and the second multi-nation tournament after the 2002 World Cup co-hosted in Japan and South Korea. The United States hosted the World Cup in 1994, and the Women's World Cup in 1999 and 2003. Canada has never hosted the men's tournament, but did organise the last Women's World Cup in 2015. Mexico, already the first nation to have hosted the World Cup two times (in 1970 and 1986), would also become the first nation to host the event three times.

According to North American media, the United States would host 60 of the 80 matches of the 2026 World Cup (see format below), with Canada and Mexico each hosting 10 matches. The United States would also host all of the games in the knockout phase from the quarter-finals onward.
