FIFA: $501.7m in revenues and net loss of -$369m for fiscal year 2016

FIFA posted $501.7m in revenue in its 2016 fiscal year (01/01 - 31/12/2016), according to the financial report of the body, published on 07/04/2017. Expenses for the year amounted to $893m, of which 70% were related to football activities in 2016. "The net result reported for 2016 amounted to -$369m whereas the operating cash flow was positive at $149m. While a negative result is also expected in 2017, a significant surplus is foreseen in 2018, the year of the World Cup, leading to a positive result over the four-year cycle in the range of $100m," stated FIFA.

"FIFA has been early to adopt the new revenue recognition standard IFRS 15. This method more accurately reflects the organisation’s income pattern over a four-year World Cup cycle, in which three years of steady outgoings are typically offset by the revenue of the fourth," added the international federation.

On a four-year cycle (01/01/2015 to 31/12/2018) including a World Cup, FIFA has budgeted for $5.656bn in revenue, up 4.6% compared to previous cycle (2011-2014, $5.408bn). For the 2015-2018 cycle, the forecasted expenses…
