Eastern Europe and Russia should have nearly 80 million subscribers to pay-TV services in 2022, compared to about 81 million in 2016, an estimated loss of 1 million subscribers in six years, according to a study on pay-TV in Eastern Europe, published by Digital TV Research on 10/04/2017.

This research institute believes the decrease is linked to "hard times in Eastern Europe where job prospects are bad, forcing many people to seek work abroad. A migration which, coupled with a low birth rate, indicates that the population will decline in 15 of the 22 countries covered by the study between 2016 and 2022."

"There will be an impact on the television sector. The number of subscriber households will fall in 18 countries between 2016 and 2022, some losing almost 2 million," added Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research.

  • The study 'Eastern Europe Pay TV Forecasts' covers 22 countries and 75 TV operators in Eastern Europe.
