Portugal: President of the Federation, Fernando Gomes calls for TV rights centralization

TV rights centralization "has advantages in allowing a better distribution of these rights and a balanced competition," said Gomes, president of the FPF (Portuguese Football Federation) in an interview with Portuguese newspaper Diario Economico, on the 26/08/2013.

Gomes said that among the European Championships, only the Spanish Liga and the Portuguese Liga Zon Sagres do not apply TV rights centralization. Regarding its application, the former president of the Portuguese Professional Football League wants a transitional period and calls for solidarity mechanism "between the best known and most powerful clubs and those who have less capacity to generate income".

"Above all, there must be a perfectly clear vision of how TV rights revenues are shared between the different actors of the championship," said the man who was elected head of the FPS in December 2011.

In Portugal, clubs individually negotiate the sale of TV rights for their home matches. In 2012/13, the total television revenues of the 16 Liga Zon Sagres was around 60 million euros, 90% concentrated by FC Porto, Benfica and…
