Sony and FIFA will produce and broadcast the 2014 World Cup final in 4K technology

The final of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, on the 07/13/2014 at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro, will be produced and broadcast in 4K technology, Japanese company Sony and FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) announced at the 2013 IBC (International Broadcasting Convention) in Amsterdam (Netherlands), on the 13/09/2013.

4K technology, also known as Ultra HD, offers a quality of image which features 16 times the resolution of traditional Full-HD. FIFA and Sony have tested it at the 2013 Confederations Cup (from the 15 to the 30/06/2013 in Brazil). "At IBC2012 Sony announced its technical collaboration with FIFA to produce the 2014 tournament in HD," said Niclas Ericson, Director of FIFA TV, on the 13/09/2013.

"The World Cup Final in 4K is the next natural evolution. We needed to be sure we had the technology that could deliver the trial this summer. We believe 4K will create a richer and more exciting viewing experience for viewers," said FIFA TV's director.

For now, only the final will be produced in 4K to persuade broadcasters to adopt this format. FIFA is…
